How this calculator works

Your total cost is the buy price times the number of shares, plus buying fees. Your proceeds are the sell price times shares, minus selling fees. Profit is the difference.

The break-even price is the sell price you need just to get your money back after both sets of fees.

FormulaProfit = (sell price × shares − sell fees) − (buy price × shares + buy fees)

Common questions

Does this work for fractional shares?

Yes. Enter the exact number of shares, decimals included.

How is the gain taxed?

In the US, profits on shares held more than a year are long-term capital gains, usually taxed at 0%, 15% or 20%. Shares held a year or less are taxed as ordinary income.

What if I bought at several prices?

Use the average cost calculator first to get your average price per share, then enter that here.
