Retirement calculator
Estimate how much you need for retirement, how much you are on track to have, and the monthly amount that closes the gap.
Projected at 65, in today's dollars
You need about $1,250,000 to spend $50,000 a year. To close the gap, save about $1,315 a month instead of $500.
Today's dollars remove inflation so the numbers compare with prices now. Social Security, pensions and taxes are not included.
How this calculator works
Your savings grow until retirement with your monthly contributions. The result is shown in today's dollars by removing inflation, so it compares with prices now.
What you need is your yearly spending divided by your withdrawal rate. At 4%, that is 25 times your spending.
Needed = yearly spending ÷ withdrawal rateCommon questions
What withdrawal rate should I use?
4% is the classic rule of thumb for a 30-year retirement. For longer retirements, many plan with 3–3.5%.
Does this include Social Security?
No. To include it, reduce your yearly spending by the benefit you expect.
Why today's dollars?
A million dollars in 35 years will buy much less than today. Today's dollars let you compare the result with your current budget.
FatDCA calculators are educational estimates, not investment, tax or legal advice. Results depend on the assumptions you enter, and past returns do not predict future returns.
