Asset allocation by age

Get a starting mix of stocks and bonds based on your age and how much risk you can live with.

A starting mix

80% stocks · 20% bonds

A common rule of thumb: 110 minus your age in stocks. It shifts gradually toward bonds as you get older, so a crash close to retirement hurts less.

How this calculator works

A classic rule of thumb holds about 110 minus your age in stocks, adjusted for how much risk you can live with, with the rest in bonds.

As you age, the mix shifts toward bonds so a crash close to retirement does less damage.

FormulaStocks % = (100, 110 or 120) − age, kept between 20% and 95%

Common questions

Is this advice?

No. It is a starting point. Your goals, other income and nerves matter as much as your age.

What is a target-date fund?

A single fund that holds a mix like this and shifts it automatically as the target year approaches.

How often should I rebalance?

Once a year, or when any part drifts more than about 5 percentage points from target.
