FIRE

Financial Independence, Retire Early.

FIRE is a movement of people who save and invest aggressively so they can stop depending on a paycheck years or decades before the usual retirement age.

The core math

Most FIRE plans use the 4% rule: if your investments equal about 25 times your yearly spending, you can likely live off them. That target is called your FIRE number.

The two levers are how much you save and how much you spend. A higher savings rate shortens the road dramatically.

Flavors of FIRE

Lean FIRE aims for a minimal budget, FatFIRE for a comfortable or lavish one, and Coast FIRE for saving enough early that you can ease off and let growth finish the job.

ExampleSpending $40,000 a year means a FIRE number of $1,000,000.
